Kierstan McCaw

Southridge School
Science Curriculum Leader
Surrey
Kierstan began her teaching career at a boarding school in Quebec where she taught both chemistry and physics. Inquiry and design have always been two of her core passions. During this time, her students won several Science Olympic competitions in Ottawa in the Rube Goldberg Machine and Bridge Building categories. Taking advantage of the large wide-open spaces on campus, she taught a popular unit on the design and launch of rockets. She has spent the last twenty years teaching chemistry at Southridge School where she is the Curriculum Leader for the science department. She is currently the regional coordinator of the National Crystal Growing Competition. At Southridge, Kierstan led her team in a paradigm shift to incorporate a student centred, discussion based, collaborative learning environment supported by the Harkness philosophy. In the laboratory setting, Kierstan has implemented many guided inquiry labs where students design their own procedures to solve problems.
